Megan OrlandoMegan Orlando, a State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota student and intern in our Vision Research Program, has been named to the 2014 All-Florida Academic Team and awarded the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates within the Marine Immunology Program at Mote Marine Laboratory.

The Roskamp Institute, in partnership with the Open University in the UK, offers a 3-4 year doctoral degree in Neuroscience. We have posted an ad for two positions available on naturejobs.com which you can view here.

Roskamp Insitute Clinic is a clinical trial site location site for a new Alzheimer's Disease study.


Roskamp Institute hosted the Sarasota-Bradenton Chapter of BioFlorida in March for a panel discussion on the topic: Intellectual Property and Start Ups for the life sciences industry.   METV recorded the meeting which you can view here.

Industry executives, an angel investor and an IP attorney participated in a panel discussion regarding the role of intellectual property protections in start ups/ventures, the timing and procedures pertinent to seeking IP protections, and when to pursue international protections. Panelists also provided insights regarding enforcement of IP rights and recent trends in IP.

Roskamp Institute has had a research paper by lead author Daniel Paris published online in The Journal of Biological Chemistry: The Spleen Tyrosine Kinase (syk) Regulates Alzheimer's Aß Production and Tau Hyperphosphorylation.

BioFlorida BioFlorida Chapter Award was presented to Jamie Humphrey.  Please see the the below announcement:

The BioFlorida Chapter Award recognizes the most influential and active of BioFlorida's eight regional chapters. Regional Chapters are volunteer led and serve as BioFlorida's regional link to the lifescience community in the area.

Michael Van Butsel of DPR Construction serving as the Business Chair, and James Humphrey of the Roskamp Institute, serving as the Science Chair, were each awarded the BioFlorida Chapter Award for creating and serving as co-chairs for the BioFlorida Sarasota-Bradenton Chapter. They organized a dynamic leadership team including a cross section of academics, economic development council's, core scientific companies and related life science businesses.

Having only started the chapter in March, the chapter has held three chapter meetings engaging 60-75 attendees in regional life sciences programming and introduced a new regional BioFlorida event named The BioTech Expo, a life science poster and vendor event that showcased the strong STEM infrastructure in the region attracting more than 150 attendees.

The Roskamp Institute is devoted to understanding causes of and finding cures for neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders and addictions. Based in Sarasota, Florida, the Institute utilizes a broad range of scientific approaches to understanding the causes of and potential therapies for these disorders with an emphasis on Alzheimer's disease.

The Mission of The Roskamp Institute is to conduct scientific research to discover safe and effective new drug therapies to successfully treat diseases of the mind and to promote healthy aging.

Headed by Dr. Fiona Crawford, the institute employs experienced and interdisciplinary scientists and technicians and houses state-of-the-art research labs and equipment to conduct scientific research. The quality of research performed at the institute reflects its motto: "Better science. Real discovery."
